Turf to Triumph
Cornwall Central School District
Modernized athletic complex and locker rooms for enhanced safety and accessibility
Cornwall Central School District set out to reimagine its athletic facilities as safer, more versatile, and more welcoming spaces for students and the broader community. Tetra Tech’s design transforms the high school stadium into a modern multi-sport destination while delivering complementary renovations at the middle school, creating an integrated athletic campus that supports competition, school pride, and year-round community use.
At the center of the project is the conversion of the existing natural grass field into a multi-use synthetic turf stadium. This upgrade delivers a durable, predictable playing surface that is weather-resistant, high-performing for extending seasonal use, reduces maintenance demands, and provides more consistent conditions for student athletes. Designed to accommodate multiple sports and community events, the new field gives the district greater flexibility for programming while maximizing the benefits of the improved facility.
The stadium improvements also include a competition-ready track and field complex featuring an eight-lane straightaway and a six-lane running track surfaced with resilient materials selected to support athlete safety, comfort, and performance. The design meets competitive standards while creating a more forgiving surface that intends to reduce impact-related injuries. Expanded bleachers further elevate the experience, with new grandstands designed to seat approximately 1,200 spectators and improve comfort, visibility, and community engagement during games and events.
To support increased activity, safety and visibility, the project upgrades site amenities throughout the campus. New stadium lighting extends usable hours and improves safety for evening events, while renovated adjacent tennis courts and additional parking enhance accessibility and convenience during high-attendance programs. Together, these improvements reinforce the stadium’s role as a community hub by bringing athletic events closer to the center of the district and strengthening school spirit.
The design team also addressed significant site challenges through thoughtful engineering and environmental stewardship. Working within a steeply sloped property that includes a regulated wetland and lower-elevation field areas, the team developed a comprehensive stormwater management strategy incorporating advanced filtration and storage systems. This solution protects downstream resources while preserving the district’s vision for a complete, high-quality track and field complex, balancing performance, durability, and environmental responsibility.
At the middle school, the Tetra Tech design team improved the locker room facilities to better support student athletes with dedicated spaces for boys’ and girls’ teams. By repurposing underutilized areas and improving circulation paths, accessibility, and visibility within spaces, the design enhances safety, functionality, and day-to-day operations for both students and staff. Updated durable finishes and fixtures create a more comfortable, modern environment for team preparation and recovery.
Tetra Tech’s architectural and engineering team delivered a resilient, high-performing athletic campus that advances safety, expands programming opportunities, reduces long-term maintenance needs, and deepens community connection.
