Levels of Play

A previously underutilized outdoor play area at Burton Street Elementary was a poorly draining and monolithic hardscape not serving the needs of the 400-student population.

This playscape redesign transforms and expands the structured play area to offer spaces for all students, regardless of ability, to engage, play, or simply relax. Accurate regrading improved drainage and accessibility along with an ADA-compliant ramp connecting upper and lower play areas. Bright colors pay homage to the school colors and textured surfaces differentiate the levels according to play needs.

On the upper level, an artificial turf zone with a bounce wall creates a practice space for field hockey and lacrosse with seating integrated into a retaining wall. Safety netting separates the area from the adjacent pickleball, basketball, and four square.

On the lower level, playground equipment was replaced with particular attention to providing sufficient fall protection, and tent structures were incorporated to break up the space and provide shaded areas for relaxation.

Organized, well detailed and varied play areas allow each student to safely find the activity that suits them.
